He loved the things he owned more than he loved God. Unfortunately, he became an eternal frame of reference for what can happen to those who put money and things before a relationship with God and other people. The rich young man did not want to give away everything he had. He was the son of the Egypts most notorious ruler and yet in just 10 years Tutankhamun reversed and destroyed everything his father Akhenaten had accomplished. THE RICH YOUNG RULER (Part 1) Someone came to Jesus with this question: Teacher, what good deed must I do to have eternal life Matthew 19:16 (NLT) Most of the Jews in Jesus’ day believed that God would never bestow wealth on a sinner so the rich young ruler presumed he’d inherit eternal life. Nobody has been or will be saved by following commands or by doing or not doing. In contrast, Zacchaeus was sorrowful to the point of sincerely repenting of anything amiss in his life – even to the point of restoring to individuals anything falsely taken. The rich young ruler is an excellent example of being so earthly minded that he was no heavenly good. Long ago a young boy became the king of one of the worlds most powerful nations. Clearly the commands Jesus gave this young ruler were not to provide salvation. He has money He might have land and have houses, but he also has mercy and distributes to the poor. A steward is a person who has substance also. He steals He is a thief, because he is stealing from the poor. 19:8).Ģ) The rich young ruler was very sorrowful – but not to the point of sincerely repenting of his selfishness. A rich man is one who has funds, and properties, and lands, and houses, and he gives to no one. In contrast, Zacchaeus was willing to deny self and share his riches with those less fortunate and restore anything taken by false accusation (Lk.
